ESSLLI 2018 participants may need a Bulgarian visa to enter Bulgaria. Please check the information about countries that require/do not require a visa for Bulgaria at the official web site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA):
Participants can apply for a visa at the Bulgarian embassy or consulate in the region in which they live. To avoid uncertainty, participants will be advised to apply for a visa as early as possible. It is recommended that they apply for a Bulgarian visa at least 1 month in advance.

The invitation letter will be issued after the successful registration and payment. Please note, that it takes few working days for preparing and sending the invitation letter.
Your name must be listed exactly as it appears on your passport. Any differences between the name on your passport and the name on your invitation letter or other documentation could lead to a delay and/or denial of your visa. Please also provide information about your current affiliation (university, organization) as well as postal address.
Please note that the ESSLLI organizing committee is not authorized to assist with the VISA process beyond providing the Notification of Invitation Letter issued by ESSLLI organizing committee. If your visa application is denied, ESSLLI organizing committee cannot change the decision of the MFA, nor will ESSLLI organizing committee engage in discussion or correspondence with the MFA or the Embassy on behalf of the applicant. The registration fee can be refunded when the VISA application of individual has been denied. Please, check the conditions listed in subsection “Payment and Cancellation conditions” in “Registration” sections.
It takes around one month for the Embassy to process the VISA application, please register as early as you can to make sure you have enough time.
Visa-free regime for holders of Schengen visas for a stay of up to 90 days
On 25 January 2012 the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Bulgaria adopted a decision according to which by the date of Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area, our country will unilaterally apply a visa-free system for holders of valid Schengen visas. They will have the right to enter and reside in the Republic of Bulgaria for a period of no more than three months in any six-month period from the date of the first entry, without needing to have a Bulgarian short-stay visa. The decision entered into force on 31.01.2012.
